Put your money in!

I have shared this story with many of you this week, but had to post the video so you could get the full effect.

A traveling mind

I have traveled to State College, Pa, Florida, and Texas nine out of the last eleven days, and as a result have had quite a bit of time to reflect. In short, I have learned the following:

  • 1. I "LUV" Southwest Airlines! The free drink coupons, great customer service, lack of baggage fees, and comic relief has yet to be matched by any other airline.
  • 2. Pennsylvania is just as beautiful in the Spring as it is in the Fall, and graduates of Penn State are proud to be Alums!

  • 3. It doesn't matter where we go or what we do, quality time spent with the best of friends is priceless.

  • 4. Although I don't agree with everything I have said or done, it's important to embrace my past and understand it is what has made me who I am today.

  • 5. Family is my biggest supporter, and one of my strongest values. No matter what I have chosen to do or try, they have always been there to encourage my successes and cushion my failures. I am truly fortunate and so appreciative.

  • 6. My Mother has a big heart, and a kind ear. As I stood in a crowded room of women describing how they knew my Mother, I witnessed the impact her friendship has had on people, and recognize how rare it is to be able to fill a room with lifetime friends.

  • 7. The older I get, the more I am able to laugh and embrace my imperfections. Aubrae, I am starting to believe 31 is the new 21!

  • 8. My MiMi is one remarkable woman. She has a silent strength, courage, poise, generosity, and love like no one I have ever known.

  • 9. I enjoy long conversations at the table with my Father so much more now than I did when I was a teen. Turns out, he just might know a few things.
  • 10. My husband was everything I wasn't looking for in a guy, yet everything I ever dreamed of. I could not be more thankful for the man, father, and husband I wake up next to every day. He is the best thing that ever happened to me!

Whether I was in Nittany Lion Country, at Universal with the Golden Girls, or playing with jewelry in Texas, one final thought crossed my mind as I drove home this afternoon...

Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats the embrace and love from a child (or two).

I am so glad to be home!

A lesson in prayer...

Last night, a band of storms strolled across Eastern Pennsylvania, flashing lightening and rattling the house with thunder. The storm hit right around 8:30pm, Kate's bed time. So, as we were reading her first book, she began to get scared.

Kate: Mommy, what's that?

Mom: Oh, that's just thunder. Jesus is bowling, Dear.

Kate: Bowling? I don't like thunder. I don't like bowling. It's scary.

Mom: You don't have to be scared, sweetie. Jesus likes to bowl. It just gets a little loud when he hits a strike and knocks all the pins down.

Kate: Well (pause...in deep thought)...maybe we can ask him to stop?

Mom: Sure. Do you want to say a prayer?

Kate: Well, (pause) will you help me (head slightly cocked)?

Mom: Sure. What would you like to say?

Kate: Dear Jesus...

Mom: Will you please stop bowling?

Kate: Because I don't want the thunder to come.

Mom: I love you, Jesus.

Kate: Love you, Jesus.

Mom: Amen.

Kate: Amen. Mommy?

Mom: Yes, dear?

Kate: Is the thunder going to go away? Is Jesus going to stop bowling?

Mom: He sure is, Honey. Just keep praying.

As I kissed her goodnight and closed the door, I heard her start her prayer again..."Dear Jesus.." Her head hit the pillow and eyes closed almost a half hour later, as the last band subsided. Thank you, Jesus.

Happy Mother's Day!

I am normally not one to take (or post) pictures of myself. However, since it's Mother's Day, I am making an exception and sharing these photos with all of you. These kids are my world!

Just when I thought I could not have had a better day...

"Roar!"
Happy Mother's Day!!!

I love weekends

This is my third official Mother's Day, and every year gets better and better. Today, the kids and I played in the dirt planting more flowers, ate PB&Js with cheetos for lunch (except Conor), drove the Big Red Car at the grocery store, decorated some cupcakes, and ended the day with a bowl of Mint chocolate chip ice cream picked out by Katie herself. The videos that follow I captured after we finished shoveling the bowl of ice cream with extra sprinkles. I couldn't decide which was my favorite, so I posted both.

Conor was still sitting at the table enjoying the last of his ice cream. However, Katie was so thankful (or full of sugar), she decided to head onto the deck and sing!

I love weekends...

Our Super Hero

Since birth, the Con-Man has had his set of issues. From colic to ear infections, and cradle cap to ezcema, the poor little guy has always seemed to be fighting something. In fact, bottles for his first six month of life consisted of formula, prune juice, mylicon, rice cereal, and water to deal with his appetite and assist with the lack of bowel movements and gas!

To add to his story, I woke up a week ago to find him covered from toe to waste in red bumps. Now, I mentioned the kid has eczema, so scaly red patches I am used to (despite my frequent morning and evening rub downs), but this was different! I quickly made him a doctors appointment and rushed him to the pediatrician. In her expert medical opinion, she simply stated it was a "flare up" of his eczema and prescribed yet another topical cream for our daily routine. In my most respectful "I am not another over-worried Mother, but will be taking control over his care" voice, I requested an allergy test.

The peds office called me two days ago to relay the news that yes, our dearest Conor, does have allergies...peanuts, milk, and egg whites. Well, it could be worse...it's not grass, water, or the dog (hubby was relieved)! He may not be the boy in the bubble, but this latest news may certainly present its share of challenges.

Immediately I felt like a horrible Mother. Could the two gallons of milk per week I craved during pregnancy have caused this allergy? While he hasn't yet been exposed to peanuts (I don't think), I have been filling his little body with milk (in one form or another) every day since conception! Visions flashed through my mind of poor Conor not able to enjoy a PB&J with his sister (her favorite), or having to opt for soy ice cream at the parlor. In making their lunches, I am putting seperate cheeses on their sandwiches...american for her and soy for him. Yogurts are the same...Dora and Tinkerbell for her and the soy ($1.09 each -ouch!-Hello, recession!) for him. I have been reading every label of food before serving it to ensure it was not manufactured in a plant that produces peanut products and the list goes on....

When making pancakes this morning for breakfast (Katie's request), I had to stop myself. The ingredients....yep, eggs and milk. Sigh....poor Conor...he was served sausage and pancakes with no eggs and soy milk. I guess the good news is, if I start this now, he won't know the difference by the time he is old enough to understand food should have taste.

Now, I am realistic. I understand this is minor in the big scheme of things, and am thankful for his health and happiness. But, the reality also set in when shopping for his new diet. Needless to say, I am accepting any and all ideas for snacks and food that do not cost an arm and a leg and that do not contain peanuts, egg whites, or milk. Can a child really survive on meat, vegetables and juice?

In an effort to make this news exciting, I have decided today Conor will become a Superhero, although I'm not sure of his name yet (I'll solicit suggestions from his sister later). Due to his Super powers, he needs to eat special foods. SuperMan = Kryptonite...PopEye=Spinach....The Con Man=Soy!

So, to all who are reading this, I introduce you to our little SuperHero...

Why?

"Why, Mommy? Why?" Who knew a three year old and a three letter word could be so mind boggling. This past week, Katie has been looking for reasoning...and lots of it. Every explanation follows with yet another inquiry, why? Here are some of her most recent subjects of discussion...

Why do you have to go to work, Mommy? Why?

Why is it raining?

Why is Daddy at the beach?

Why do I have to go to sleep?

Why are the worms long?

Why are the ants here?

Why did you hang the flowers Mommy?

Why is GrandMoms deck broken?

As mentioned above, each question follows with a handful of "whys?" until she is finally satisfied. I am really going to be in trouble when she realizes I am making most of this stuff up. Help!
